This series explores the various paths of how technological change happens and the social effects of these changes on Western society. To illustrate this, James Burke follows various timelines of how one innovation lead to something seemingly totally unrelated in the future such as how a 17th century Dutch cargo ship design lead to development of plastic in the 20th century. The contestants job was to buzz-in to give the answer to that sum to score 40 bonus points. The winner played the "Link the Letters" end game. Each correct answer revealed a letter behind one of the screens the first letter of the answer.

It became hard to win if some of the letters were missing and without knowing where the word started. This changed in a later version of the show by having the eight letters arranged in circular form, but still without revealing where it actually started. Solving the 8-letter word won a grand prize. A contestant was allowed to compete in up to four "Link The Letters" rounds before they 'retired' undefeated, although very few contestants ever achieved this feat.

The object was to connect the first picture to the last with the help of three clues on each.
